PSA & NJFCC definitions of Nature Photography as discussed on 24 Sept 2007

Nature Slides

1) Human elements shall not be present in a nature photo, except on the rare occasion where those human elements enhance the story (i.e. a barn swallow in a barn or an osprey on its nest on top of a telephone pole), but even here the human element should not be a main part of the image.

2) The new rule—according to NJFCC “any living plant is [now] acceptable as long as it is photographed in a natural setting.” HCC has also decided to adopt this new rule. So, now you can photograph something out in a field, etc. without having to worry about having it disqualified from the nature division because it is a hybrid or was once cultivated. However, this new rule has not been accepted by PSA. They still do not allow any hybridized/cultivated plants in their nature competitions. Therefore, if you decide to photograph a non-naturally-occurring plant, it cannot be sent out to any of the PSA competitions in the nature division. But, we will be able to use them in our own nature competitions and send them out to the NJFCC nature division competitions.

3) All images must be considered “digital realism”. Small modifications (i.e. cropping, boosting the contrast, etc.) to improve the presentation of the image are allowed provided that they could have been done at the time the photo was taken (such as if done with filters or by adjusting your jpeg settings) and do not change the truth of the original nature story. These are global modifications (done to the photo as a whole). Selective enhancements, such as dodging & burning or selectively sharpening a photo, are NOT allowed. Cloning in or out any part of an image is also NOT allowed and can lead to disqualification. If you would like to improve your image by doing any additional modifications, you must print it or send it into the Pictorial image competition.

When using any driving directions or map, it's a good idea to do a reality check and make sure the road still exists, watch out for construction, and follow all traffic safety precautions. This is only to be used as an aid in planning.
