HILLCREST CAMERA CLUB
CONTEST RULES
(Revised August 2007)
The following rules and requirements apply to all regular monthly, assigned subject and special contests of the Hillcrest
Camera Club (HCC). Certain special conditions may apply to contests conducted by organizations with which the Hillcrest Camera
Club is affiliated and these will be specified. Rules applying to the annual contest and to PSA interclub competition are
mentioned separately.
Section I. Print and Slide Requirements:
A. Prints: Monochrome, Color, & Trade-Process Color.
1. Monochrome & Color: Prints and mounts may be of any size up to a maximum
of 16” x 20”. Monochrome prints may be toned. Monochrome prints may contain
1 color for emphasis. Hand colored prints are acceptable in the Color-Process category. Print presentation may
be of either vertical or horizontal format and must be mounted. Mounts may be of any color. All work must be entirely that
of the maker.
2. Trade-Process Color: (Prints prepared in a professional lab from member color
negatives or slides.) For Club competitions no distinction will be made between
the “Color” prints and the “Trade Process Color” prints. However, for PSA and
NJFCC competitions these prints must be segregated. Therefore, to identify the
“Trade-Process Color” prints the back of the mount will be marked by the owner
with the letters TP. All work except processing must be that of the maker
3. The print title, maker’s name and address, and club affiliation must appear on the
back of the mount, preferably near the upper left hand corner. If desired the title
of the print can be placed on the lower left front of the mount or the print.
B. Pictorial and Nature Images.
1. Slides are generally considered as those being 2” X 2” in size. Any type of
mount which does not jam the projector being used is acceptable. Mounts that jam the projector shall be disqualified. The
slide maker’s title, maker’s name and address and club affiliation must appear on the mount. All slides must
be properly spotted for projection; this being the lower lefthand corner when viewed in the upright position.
2. Digital images shall be e-mailed to the Pictorial Slide Chairman krosnest@verizon.net or the Nature Chairman tbodeo@rcn.com
on the Thursday before the monthly competition meeting. Late e-mails will not be accepted. Image size shall be as follows:
Images should be no more than 768 x 1024 pixels, horizontally or vertically.
The image shall be saved as a JPEG file no larger than 300 Kb. The color space preferred, but not required is sRGB, quality
8.
4. The file name for each image shall be as follows:
Maker’s Initials-Title-Entry No.jpg
It is important to keep the title short.

both the 1024 and the 768 maximum limit. (See the last page of “Rules” to resize in Adobe Elements 5.0)
5. Previous entry in contests other than the Club’s shall not disqualify them from entry in
the Club’s contests.
6. A print, slide, or digital image may be remade for re-entry in a regular monthly contest providing the original title,
negative and/or transparency is utilized. This will encourage improvement in picture presentation, cropping, etc. This applies
to any picture not winning a place in a regular contest, and provided it is re-entered during the current club season.
6a: An image that has not been remade as stated above can not be reentered for competition.
6b: Images that have won a prize in a previous competition may not be reentered in the monthly competition. This applies
to winners that have been judged by the club
or an outside judge.
7. Images, when not placing in a contest judged by the club members, may be re-submitted,
without being remade, for judging in the next contest when judging is made by other than
a club member.
8. Judging will alternate between club members and invited outside judges, as may be found
practicable. (Note re-entry of pictures in 7 above). When the Club is judging only active
members votes are to be counted, and members will not vote for their own entries.
9. Place points will be awarded as follows:
1st place – 50 points
2nd place – 40 points
3rd place – 30 points
4th place – 20 points
All entries will receive 10 points.
In case of ties equal points will be awarded.
10. Complete and accurate records of all entries, place and point scores and contest
standings of each member, shall be kept current by the contest chairpersons. Monthly
and cumulative scores and standings shall be made available to the members upon
request to the chairperson.
11. At the end of the Club season, the member having the highest total point score within
each division shall be awarded a trophy as the Monochrome Print Maker, Color Print
Maker, Pictorial Slide Maker or Nature Slide Maker of the year. Other place awards,
with or without trophies, may be made at the discretion of the Club trustees. In case of a
tie score, duplicate awards will be made. These awards will normally be made at the
annual dinner.
Section III. Annual Contest.
1. Normally four prints and/or slides will be allowed per member, although this number
may be altered at the discretion of the trustees.
2. The “Robert J. Miller Memorial Award” for best contemporary slide will be awarded at
the discretion of the trustees. If so, the slide will be selected from the regular slides
entered at the annual contest. Contemporary definition: creative, imaginative, experimental and/or a departure from
realistic representation.
3. Only those prints or slides having been entered in a regular monthly, nature or assigned
subject contest during the current contest season shall be eligible, with the following two
exceptions:
3a. Prints or slides, which are not available for the annual contest because of
participation as an entry of the HCC in an outside competition or exhibition, may be
held for the annual contest of the following year.
3b. A print or slide (place winner or not) may be remade and held for the annual contest
according to the procedure as stated in Section II, paragraph 7.
4. The contest chairperson of each division shall prepare a listing of those prints or slides
which are not available for entry in the annual contest because of PSA interclub or other
competition as an entry of the HCC and will forward this list to the contest chairperson of
that division for the following year as a part of the permanent contest record.
5. Division chairpersons shall provide each member with a list of their prints or slides which
are eligible for entry in the annual contest.
6. Prints or slides to be entered in the annual contest are to be submitted to the proper
contest chairperson no later than the last regular meeting before the annual contest. With
the approval of the contest chairperson entries may be submitted after this time, providing
the maker presents a list of these entries to the chairperson.
7. Since judges from outside the Club membership are generally obtained for the annual
contest, the method of judging shall be decided after consultation of the judges, division
chairpersons and president, and/or trustees, as are present.
8. One winning print and slide shall be chosen in each category.
9. The first place entry of print and slide shall be named respectively, “Print of the Year”,
and “Slide of the Year” in each category. Trophies will normally be awarded to the
makers of the winning print and slide at the annual dinner.
Section IV. Entry in PSA & NJFCC Interclub Competitions.
1. Prints and/or slides to be entered in interclub competitions will normally be chosen from the monthly contests of
prints, pictorial slides and nature slides.
2. The above noted print and slide requirements also apply to NJFCC & PSA competitions,
but they must conform to the competition rules in force in those competitions.
3. Persons belonging to more than one camera club must confine their entries to PSA interclub competitions to only one
camera club.
Section V. Review of Rules.
All members are urged to direct any questions concerning contest rules to the contest
chairpersons. Suggestions by members on possible rule changes may be made to the
contest chairpersons at anytime and these chairpersons will present these suggestions to
the Club president for consideration. Before each club season the separate contest
chairpersons shall review the rules applying to their division and make suggestions as
needed. If proper action is not provided by these methods the Board of Trustees shall
then be consulted. A copy of these rules shall be presented to present members and to
each new member entering the Club. The above rules will remain in force until such time
as changes are authorized by the Board of Trustees.
How to Resize:
ADOBE ELEMENTS 5.0
Go to File, Duplicate to duplicate your original.
Close the original file after the copy is made so you don't confuse the two.
Go to Image, Resize, Image Size: See window illustration
1. Starting from the bottom of the window, make sure all three boxes are checked: Scale Styles, Constrain Proportions and
Resample Image. The box alongside Resample Image should read "bicubic".
Change Resolution to 300, then under Pixel Dimensions Width and Height, take the largest figure and substitute 1024 pixels.
Look to see if the smaller figure changes to a number less than 768. If it does, you're all set!
If the smaller figure is too large, simply change the smaller figure to 768 and the top figure should change also. Just remember,
the Longest side of the picture should be no more that 1024, and the Shortest no more than 768. When you click OK the picture
will resize.
Hit OK and then go to File, Save As and enter in the file name your initials, hyphen, Title, hyphen (you can leave the image
number for your reference), and dot, jpg.
KJD-Woodland Bridge-8390.jpg See Below:
